WV Raman's sharp mind helps him bag women's coach job

WV Raman
MUMBAI: The BCCI and the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) let go of the opportunity to rope in Gary Kirsten as the coach of the national women's team citing ‘conflict of interest' but settled for the next best candidate available by appointing former India Test cricketer WV Raman for the role on Thursday.

Kirsten and Raman were among the 10 candidates who were interviewed for the role after the CoA forwarded 11 applications to the three-member ad hoc panel comprising Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy. New Zealander Mark Coles withdrew his application a day before the interview process.

The ad hoc panel eventually shortlisted three candidates — Kirsten, Raman and former pacer-turned-selector Venkatesh Prasad — in that order of preference and then confirmed Raman as the new coach.

The interim coach of the women's team, Ramesh Powar, who recently found himself involved in a war of words with senior India cricketer Mithali Raj, was also interviewed for 45 minutes by the panel. Powar, who had the backing of India's T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur for the role, fell short by way of experience and profile.

The 53-year-old Raman, a formidable left-handed opening batsman during his playing days, is not only considered one of the sharpest minds in the vast Indian domestic circuit but also someone who has achieved a fair share of success as coach in domestic cricket. The panel that first opted for Kirsten given his profile and what he accomplished with the men's team between 2008 & 2011, unanimously agreed on Raman as the next best choice.

Kapil, Gaekwad and Rangaswamy were the only three individuals in the room when the interview process began and all the shortlisted candidates turned out to be the trio's unanimous choice in that order.

Media reports suggesting that BCCI / CoA would be fine with the said conflict should Kirsten be considered, turned out to be incorrect. Kirsten replied to the panel's e-mail and said that if he was being given the choice between RCB and the Indian team, he would have to remain at the franchise given the contract he had recently signed with them. The panel regretted that Kirsten's services will have to be missed and then contacted Raman.
